![]() Yep, size of speaker and placement of the cross member are identical. OK, bored, can't sleep, decided to pull speakers apart and measure them up. More info to come as things progress, but probably slowly. Unfortunately I haven't seen a single pair of these pop up on Yahoo yet. It also seems to share the same box construction and drivers of the same dimensions. Sansui don't seem to have moved to air core inductors or polyprop caps until 1990 with the SP-1010 (and the SP-a2000, which is a build all of its own). Less fancy but easier to work on SP-1000 crossover. I mean I like the fact that Sansui had a try at something new but I think it may have been more of a fad or marketing move than an innovation that actually improved the sound. I'm not convinced that the grounding of the magnetic shields on the drivers was a worthwhile endeavour either. So it does not appear that the 1000 was an upgraded version of the 100i, just a re-released version that was easier to throw together. I've yet to measure them up to see if the share the same exact dimensions. The only difference I can see is that the back panel of the 1000 is made of an actual plank of wood where as the back panel of the 100i is a plank of particle board. The box shares the same cross brace design with the drivers being bolted to the internal X and not the front panel. The 1000 has no bypass caps at all, a more basic arrangement for the components (which has the benefit of being easier to work on but it feels a bit cheaper all the same) and crosses over at 2000Hz even though it looks to use the same drivers. In the area of the crossovers the 100i has bypass caps and fancy mounts for the inductors and crosses over at 1500Hz. I thought that the 1000's would be upgraded versions of the 100i but they don't seem to be. I'm looking at the differences between the SP-100i speakers which were released in 1987 and the SP-1000 which were released in 1989. ![]()
